The Farm

The Farm at Ysgol Y Parc

The farm at our school is a huge focus of the children's daily routine, learning and experience when at school. The children learn a number of lifelong skills when spending time with the animals at the farm. It also benefits their wellbeing which is explained further below...

At Ysgol Y Parc we have studied ‘The Biophilia Hypothesis’ (the concept developed by Kellert and Wilson in 1983). They believe that as human beings, we have an innate need to CONNECT, not only with other human beings but with all living things. Wilson referred to our ‘Siamese Connection’ without which we cannot be mentally well. Nature and animals can help us to REGULATE. Warm blooded animals help produce oxytocin in our brains. All mammals have oxytocin. Stroking animals lowers blood pressure and anxiety – this is scientifically proven.

When children’s wellbeing is good – their ability to learn increases.
